It took eight days for Carina, with her busy work schedule that in theory I understood completely and even respected, to edit that video into a file for me.

Eight days.

She had told me she would be in touch when it was ready, and I still did not want to be the one who seemed impatient or overeager.

But that week dragged painfully on, so that by the sixth day, it was a struggle for me to be patient anywhere, even at work.

However, my efforts to stand out even more as a man on the rise at Focus continued.

The supply order with liners for our cashiers’ trash cans arrived. The next step was to clean out trash cans.

One of our full-time cleaning personnel, Gordon, was set to clean the cans. Gordon was a good-humored and hard-working guy, but he was not overjoyed to be assigned this chore on top of his usual tasks. It didn’t seem right that Gordon should bear the burden of executing my idea, so I helped out.

We hosed down the nasty bins and dried them out with paper towels. I took a roll of liners to each station and put liners in each can, while Gordon tidied up the area we’d used to clean them all.

He shook my hand when we were done, a gesture that surprised me.

Cashiers would have to get in the habit of lining their cans at the start of their shifts and emptying them at the end. I spoke with the cashiers who were working that afternoon. Hopefully, they would get accustomed quickly and pass the chore to incoming cashiers throughout the day and across the week. In theory, that was easy, but in a big store like Focus, starting any new pattern of behavior could be tough. I felt reasonably hopeful, observing our cashiers for the moment.

I sensed Marva hovering near my shoulder. “Hey, Marva! How’s your day going?”

“It’s good, boss man.”

I turned to her with considerable surprise. Marva was usually dour, often droll, rarely cheerful. “I’m glad to hear that.”

“Yeah.” Marva nodded. I could see a glimmer in her eyes, but what that glimmer meant, I didn’t really know. She pursed up her lips like she was considering her next words carefully, so I waited.

“I suppose,” Marva drawled, “you didn’t know that Gordon is my sweetheart.”

“He’s a good man,” I said, assuming Marva meant that she found Gordon to be a particularly good co-worker.

“He is a good man. He popped the question a couple weeks ago.”

My eyebrows rose. I had never heard a whisper of gossip about Marva and Gordon, and retail was a hotbed of gossip. “Did he?”

“Yeah. We’re tying the knot next year. I gotta set a date.” She held up her left hand and I could see a diamond on her ring finger.

“Well, congratulations! You really kept it secret.”

“Yeah, I don’t mix my personal life with business.” Marva nodded to confirm this wisdom and I felt a small frisson of nervousness, as if Marva knew something about me and Carina and our "business.
